The Old University Building in Nacogdoches, Texas is the only remaining building dedicated by the Republic of Texas for higher education. In 2009, under the leadership and direction of Dr. Linda Bond, members of the 3rd Texas Cavalry gathered to assist in the celebration of the opening of the historic building on its 150th birthday. This year it will be 1860 and Abe Lincoln has just been elected President. Gov. Sam Houston (Brad Maul) himself will be on site to discuss the new administration. This will occur on September 10, 11, and 12 with performances on Friday and Saturday at 7 PM and Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Tickets are $15 per person. See more info in this SFA Today article.

This event has quickly become a regional favorite and keeps improving every year.

Members of the 3rd are planning to travel with the Douglass Battery and fight with Cleburne's Division to support this National Event.

Historic Plantation Leindo is one of the older land grants in Texas . It is the site of the first large cotton plantation in Texas located near Hempstead and is the plantation mentioned in Texas History texts as Groce’s Plantation where the Texas Army stopped to train before its victory at San Jacinto. The house on the site hosted Sam Houston and George Custer. It is a great setting for a living history event and this 2010 will mark the twelth year of the event and the twelth birthday of the 3^rd Texas Cavalry Living History Group as we know it.

Liendo Plantation is located in Hempstead, Texas – 55 miles west of Houston, just North of Highway 290, on Wyatt Chapel Rd., in between Liendo Parkway and 1488.

The Battle for El Camino Real is a great event in Madisonville, Texas co-hosted by our friends in the Terry's Texas Rangers and White's Battery. Located along the King’s Highway (El Camino Real) this historically fictitious battle depicts what might have happened had Federal troops penetrated into Texas and attempted to disrupt commerce in the state. This is a fun event set along Lake Madison. There is a school day on Friday with a skirmish and then battles on Saturday and Sunday. The event also provides a good dinner and dance on Saturday night. From I-45 either direction, exit HWY 21 West, take a right on East Collard, then a right on East Shipp, which will take you to the park entrance on the right.

Always a favorite of the 3rd, the Battle of Pleasant Hill near Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, is a true reenactment and provides a rare opportunity to relive history on the actual historic site of a real battle. The event will take place 3 miles north of Pleasant Hill at 23271 Louisiana Hwy. 175.

This one is a little different. In addition to the standard camping, sutlers, and battles, there is also an exciting battle in the streets of historic Jefferson each morning. The Saturday night Ball usually takes place in a historic hotel.

The reenactment of several military actions of the Vicksburg Campaign is planned for October 19-21, 2012, with up to 5,000 participants.  Friends of Raymond, since sponsoring an initial 1998 national reenactment, has preserved 136 acres of the battlefield, has added interpretative trails, and has placed reproduction artillery pieces of the correct type on the artillery positions of the Battle of Raymond, fought two miles southwest of that central Mississippi town on May 12, 1863  In 1998 a national level reenactment spurred the formation of the Friends of Raymond, which worked with Friends of the Vicksburg Campaign & Historic Trail, Inc., in the planning, protection, and interpretation of campaign sites.
Plans are to commemorate portions of General Ulysses S. Grant’s 1863 Vicksburg Campaign, today recognized by the US Army as "the most brilliant campaign ever fought on American soil."  From May 1-17, Grant’s army flawlessly maneuvered, caused the Confederate forces to disperse, and successfully fought five battles against an outnumbered opponent.  Grant then marched on May 18 to Vicksburg's back door, and unsuccessfully attacked the Southern citadel on May 19 and again on May 22 before settling into a successful 47-day siege.  Three of the campaign's engagements, the Battles of Raymond and Champion Hill, and the May 22 assault at Vicksburg, will be re-enacted on portions of, or adjacent to, the actual Raymond Battlefield.  The event is being staged in October, rather than May, to avoid conflict with other scheduled sesquicentennial events and to take advantage of the favorable fall weather in Mississippi.
The event will begin on Friday, October 19, 2012, with educational field programs for schools.  On Saturday, October 20, the re-enacted battles for the general public will begin with the Battle of Raymond at 10 a.m. on the actual battlefield.  At 3 p.m. on Saturday the program will continue with the Battle of Champion Hill, which was the largest Civil War battle in Mississippi and  was one of the most decisive of the Civil War.  The final re-enactment will commemorate a portion of the ill-fated assault by Union forces on the works of Vicksburg on May 22, 1863.  This event will depict the attack on the Second Texas Lunette, a crescent-shaped fortification that was located near the modern Visitors Center in the Vicksburg National Military Park.  This fortification will actually be reconstructed on property near the Raymond battlefield.  After his unsuccessful assault of May 22, Grant decided to take the city by siege. 

We've had our sights set on Gettysburg 150 for several years already. This could be the largest reenactment of all time and we're planning to be there.
