Who is the 3rd Texas Cavalry? There is a line from a Civil War song that says, “If you want to have fun…Join the Cavalry.” And there is a good reason for that line. Reenacting with the 3rd Texas Cavalry is about as much fun as you can have. As a member of the 3rd Texas Cavalry everyone in your family can enjoy reliving the War Between the States by participating in period-correct camping, cooking, dancing, marching, horse-riding, battle reenactments, drills and living history demonstrations. Our family-friendly group of about 30 members honors patriotism, the study of history, safety, and Christian conduct…and we have the time of our lives doing it. When you get into the reenacting hobby, you’ll want to join up with a group or “Regiment” that fits your personality and interests. In some Regiments all the members ride horses all the time. In other Regiments all the members “fight on foot” all the time or work only with a canon. Some groups are strictly military in nature and are not suited for women or children. One thing that is special about the 3rd Texas Cavalry Regiment is that while we all camp together as one group, our members often play a variety of roles. When it comes time for the a battle you’ll often find some members of the 3rd Texas riding hard with the mounted Cavalry, some working as couriers for the command staff, and some marching with the dismounted Cavalry. Others may choose to be part of a cannon crew for a day or just stay back and “guard the camp”. Our ladies may be found fighting as male or female soldiers, working in camp as cooks, or strolling about in hoop skirts as beautiful Southern Belles. In short, the 3rd Texas Cavalry provides the opportunity to learn about and enjoy all parts of the reenacting hobby. Our group participates in about 10 events per year mostly in the East Texas and Louisiana area. Our members live in different towns and typically drive a couple of hours to reach an event. We try once a year to schedule a big trip to participate in a national-level event. There are no attendance obiligations. Members come when they can. Our annual dues are $20 for an individual adult, $15 for students, or $35 for a family. In addition, our regiment is proud to be a member of a national-level group of reenactors known as Cleburne's Division. We encourage each member of the 3rd to join Cleburne's and pay their annual dues of $10 which provides for insurance coverage and helps sponsor national-level events attended by thousands of reenactors like ourselves. So, if this all sounds appealing to you, check out our website and please email me if you have any questions. Better yet, check out our schedule and come see us at our next event. Perhaps you’ll be the next member of the 3rd Texas Cavalry. Major Dyson Nickle
